Welcome to EDOC'99, the third in the series of international events focussing on the use of distributed object and component technologies for the enterprise. Following the success of the previous EDOCs , this year's event is being cast as a full conference rather than a workshop. However, in making the transition to a conference, we have endeavoured to maintain and indeed enhance EDOC's reputation for quality, and for fostering discussion and debate. This year's outstanding selection of 28 technical papers is supported by an enlarged program of tutorials and industry panels addressing critical enterprise computing topics. EDOC'99 also continues the tradition of offering world-class keynote presentations and tutorials from internationally renowned luminaries. The first keynote, by Frank Buschmann of Siemens Corporate Technology, will present design patterns that can be used to apply concurrent and distributed objects to enterprise problems. The second keynote, by Trygve Reenskaug, Professor Emeritus from the University of Oslo, will present a method for fully realising the potential of distributed enterprise information systems. The success of the conference rests on the efforts of many people. We would especially like to thank the program committee for their careful reviews and fair judgement. We are also grateful to the local organizing committee for their efforts in bringing the conference to Europe. Matt Mawson also deserves a special mention for his excellent graphics and promotional material? We believe EDOC'99 has something to offer everyone interested in the potential of distributed object and component based enterprise computing, and hope you will find the conference stimulating and rewarding.
